INTRODUCTION
The School Mathematics Study Group (SMSG) was
an American academic think tank focused
on the subject of reform in mathematics
education. Directed by Edward G. Begleand
financed by the National
Science Foundation, the group was created in the wake of the Sputnik crisis in
1958 and tasked with creating and implementing mathematics curriculum
for primary and secondary
education, which it did until its termination in 1977. The efforts
of the SMSG yielded a reform in mathematics education known as New Math which
was promulgated in a series of reports, which culminated in a series published
by Random House called
the New Mathematical Library. In the early years SMSG also rushed
out a set of draft textbooks in typewritten paperback format for elementary,
middle and high school students.
Perhaps
the most authoritative collection of materials from the School Mathematics
Study Group is now housed in the Archives of American Mathematics in the University
of Texas at Austin's Center for American History.
SCOPE AND
CONTENTS
Records document the history of the School mathematics Study Group
(SMSG). The records, which document the writing, implementation, and evaluation
of the SMSG curriculum, consist largely of the files of the director, Edward G.
Bagel; together with a collection of SMSG textbooks and other publications.
Records of the National Longitudinal Study of Mathematical Abilities (NLSMA)
are also present. Material includes correspondence, meeting agendas and
minutes, grant proposals, financial records, newsletters, drafts of
publications, tests, and training films
SMSG (SCHOOL
MATHEMATICS STUDY GROUP)
School mathematics study group (SMSG) is a massive endeavor
started in USA, in 1958 with a view to improve the existing system of
mathematics curriculum. In addition to its implementation and compilation of
study materials, SMSG prepared text book separately for both teachers and
students. YALE university USA; has published a set of text books of 16 number
prepared by SMSG. 8 of these books are use in secondary school and 8 companion
volumes are teacher guides. 4 books deal with arithmetic’s, 2 with algebra and
2 geometry. The preface explains;
One of the pre-requisites for improvement of the teaching of
mathematics in our schools in an improved curriculum, one which take account of
the increasing use of mathematics in science and technology and in other area
of knowledge; and at the same time which recent advantage in mathematics its
self. One of the first projects undertaken by SMSG was to enlist a group of
outstanding mathematician and mathematics teachers to prepare a series of text
books which would illustrate such an improved curriculum.
Key ideas underlining these books are structure of
arithmetic’s from algebraic, view point, real number system, as a progressive
development, metric and non-metric relations in geometry, experience with an
application of abstract concepts, the role of definition, development of
precise vocabulary and thought, experimentation and proof.
In contrast to traditional beginning of text books in
arithmetic’s; the opening chapter of SMSG volume of arithmetic’s is “Mathematics
as a method of reasoning “. The algebra is introduced through sets, similarly
the stress in geometry is an explanation of concepts .SMSG provide training
program to teachers for handling novel methods and techniques of teaching
mathematics. The curriculum text books prepared by SMSG have got world wide
reorganization.
Working on this modern concept of mathematics curriculum as
précised in USA the National Council Educational Research and Training (NCERT)
has prepared some model text books for mathematics for use in secondary school
in India. The text books in algebra prepared by NCERT deals with the following
topics-elementary number theory, fractions, rational, number, linear equation,
quadrilateral equation, radicals, complex number, integral exponents,
polynomials, partial fractions, sequence and series, permutation and
combination, binomial theorem and logarithms.
The school in Delhi state comes among the first to adopt this
model mathematics in their school curriculum. By 1970 Kerala also revised the
mathematics curriculum tune with modern mathematics sponsored by SMSG. A more
balanced curriculum is now being adopted in the National (10th and +2) pattern.
